The "Orange-Peel Skin": Let's Talk Cellulite

Cellulite is the most common metabolic disorder in people, and also one of the most talked-about concerns of the body.

Most females know what cellulite looks like on the outside. The condition is often compared to the peel of orange because cellulite has the same bumpy or dimpled appearance. The dimples may be small, scattered or more significant indentations on the hips, buttocks, back of thighs and abdomen - where cellulite is most common. Cellulite affects 80% to 90% of females and only 10% of males. Lucky females!!!!!

The lumpy, dimpled, flesh of cellulite is composed of fat cells deposited beneath the skin. Which creates the uneven surface, "orange peel skin" or "cottage cheese effect."

There are no cure or quick fixes for cellulite; but, good news, we can minimise the appearance of the "orange peel skin".

The Triggers - what causes cellulite?

  • Weight gain/weight loss - putting weight on too quickly or losing excessive weight rapidly.
  • Poor circulation -   circulatory disease
  • Nutritional habits - diets rich in carbohydrates, sugar and fats. Low water intake and excess salt.
  • Hereditary - genetic makeup and age.
  • Hormones - hormonal changes - females as we produce less estrogen, Hypothyroidism, diabetes and liver disorders.
  • Psychological - stress, anxiety and depression
  • Harmful habits - alcohol consumption and smoking
  • Lifestyle - sedentary life, lack of rest and sleep

The three types of cellulite

Type One - "Hard or compact cellulite" this is particular affects young females, such as athletes. Circulatory disease, lack of oxygen and genetic predisposition. Location on outer thighs, love handles and inner knees. It is not visible to the naked eye and appears compact.
Type Two - "Soft or flaccid" cellulite - the connective tissue becomes flexible, like a jelly consistency which appears with a sedentary life and sudden weight changes. Location is on the front and back of thighs, abdomen, back of arms and buttocks. It is visible to the naked eye.
Type Three - "Oedematous" cellulite - least common and the most difficult to remove. Can be linked to significant fluid retention. More visible in the lower part of the body and the skin looks corked. It is visible to the naked eye as the "orange peel skin".

Prevention of cellulite

Prevention of cellulite is changing your lifestyle and habits by being more active, keeping a healthy diet, drinking more water and building muscle in the areas affected, which will then give you muscle tone. Remember, cellulite affects all ages and all females.
