Why is exfoliating so important?
In our 20’s our skin cells typically take 28 days to complete a cell turnover cycle. This begins in the lowest layer of the epidermis, with skin cells migrating through each layer of the epidermis until they reach the outer-most layer, getting rid of dead skin cells and replacing them for new ones. This process is known as desquamation.
However, as we age, the desquamation cycle naturally slows down. In our 30-40’s, this process can take twice as long to happen - 2 months. In your 50’s it can takes up to three months and so on. That leaves our skin with a build up of dull, dry, dehydrated skin cells. That is why exfoliating is an essential!
